DSLR+Laptop - weather protected?

Offline
#1 questionesse
hey there,

I just experimented a little in-house with my equipment but would like to record longer periods including night outside.
So I am wondering how to effectively protect my equipment from moist.
I am shooting a Nikon D80, connected to a netbook with nikons camera control.

How do you guys protect your dslr? I was thinking about simply putting it in a small tent orsomething, but if there is something more handy let me know!

thx!

the advantage of my setup is unlimited power and storage capacity which could be important for longer shooting periods.
Is such a rain cover enough? for humidity when the sun goes down? it seems to come from all directions and the air is humid itself.
and don't you get problems with humidity on the front lens, having an impact on the images?

thx

well, i am shooting time laps in JPEG mode. i set my whitebalance and co. at the right point.
in jpeg i can have more than 8000 pictures at one 32gb card. with raw on my eos 7d it ends with ~1600 pictures.
power can i change during the pause beetwen two pictures (batteriegrip).

If you need to combat dew, you need to keep your equipment a little above dew point temperature or wrap it completely. While yo could wrap the back of your camera and laptop (a tent would work) the lens surface is always exposed.
You can of course make something yourself but there are good commercial solutions available: Kendrick dew systems or Astrozap

Check out http://www.kendrickastro.com/astro/index.html

Have ordered several DSLR lens heaters (along with power), they work really well to keep lens above dew point and they also make a neoprene body cover:

I recently shot well into the evening while a lot of the astronomers on site packed up because of heavy dew.
