I don;t see Gunther using this setup in his latest holy grail time-lapse video. And I don't see a date on the article that would indicate the relevance

No, not really. If you use LRTimelapse 5 you will have the multipass visual deflicker and don't need to take care of flicker anymore when shooting as it was back in the days.
