ND Grad filter reflection

Timelapse yesterday, most of the sequence came out fine but for a short time the sun was looking directly down the lens, and during this time you can see the front of the lens reflected on the photo.

Now looking at filter hoods, would these help?

Is this caused by light reflecting from each side?

What filter are you using?

Hi Peter,

Pretty sure it's this grad kit: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cokin-H250A-ND-G...B000A40M22

Flare is inevitable when shooting into the sun, however with this type of setup (non screw-in filters) light can leak in from the gaps between the filter and the lens especially with longer exposures. For still photography I always seal the edges with black velvet and close the eyepiece. It looks like you have a reflection from leaking light, therefore try the latter. Also the quality of these filters is not very good, I use B&W, High Tech and Lee.

Thanks Peter.

The flare doesn't bother me, just the lens reflection, but interesting that you think it may be coming through the viewfinder.
Will do some test shots in direct sunlight having sealed the edges.

Yeah, I realise the Cokin kit is budget, I just wanted some basic kit to learn on.
Is the Lee stuff less reflective?

I am sure the circular reflection is light leaking in from the side.

With the Lee Small stopper and Big stopper, there is a foam seal to help prevent this, Lee may fit your Cokin adaptor , not sure?. However I still seal the edges with a strip of black velvet, velcro at each end. I got into this shooting long exposure stills and just carried on the technique.

If you use the same lens for shooting TL perhaps use a good quality screw on, this will eliminate it completely, give better optics and less flare.

I always shut the eyepiece, just good practice.
