If you really want a full automatic ramping, you could turn on “auto direction“ in the settings and activate that. This will switch automatically from sunrise to sunset. However, I normally don't use this, since it sometimes could change unexpectedly.

thank you, I'll give it a shot. i notice there is an option to set maximum shutter length, but not minimum shutter. Does this mean you must always start with your desired minimum shutter length?

No, minimum shutter will always be the shortest shutter that your camera offers. It would make no sense to change this. Maximum shutter is just to prevent the ramping going for exposures longer then interval minus minimum dark-time.
