I recently purchased a Dell P2715Q monitor.  Unfortunately, many applications, including LRT, don't recognise these high res monitors and adjust the menu text size appropriately.  When is this support likely to be available as I have great trouble reading the text on LRT.

Did you tried to adjust the "User interface Scaling Factor" in the Settings Dialog

Er, no. Is that available in LR3? Or will I have to upgrade to LR4? I don't mind doing this as long as it will work then.

It's a new feature in LRT4. And it should detect your resolution too and set a higher scaling, you can adjust it in the settings.
