4k video slow on mac pro

I apologize if this isn't the right forum. I have a 6-core Mac Pro with 32 gb memory and ATI 5770 graphics card. Any video over 1080p is slow in playing and stutters. 4k will play for a second or two and then freeze for many seconds before resuming for another second or two further down the stream. This is with Quicktime player or Quicktime 7 player or MPEG streamclip or any other player I have. If I import the video into Final Cut Pro X, it will eventually play but of course at reduced resolution.

What is the problem? Is my graphics processor not powerful enough? What works on a Mac? Do I need to upgrade to one of the NVIDIA boards?

Thanks in advance,

John

Those high bitrate videos are meant for post processing. If you want to play them, make sure to export in lower bitrates, (quality medium). Or just export twice: Full HD for playing and 4K for post processing.
