I promised I have searched... is there a good explanation/tutorial on how to crop a full sequence in LRT5?  

Not as an effect, just one crop throughout the whole sequence.  

I keep getting a rotating effect.

Just set the crop to the first keyframe, then make sure to use the sync script to bring the settings to the other keyframes, this will make sure that the crop is equal on the keyframes if you are on Lightroom 6 or later. If you use an older Lightroom version, you'd need to manually sync only the crop to all keyframes. This is explained in the instructions also.
