H264 Files very slow in Final Cut on my M1 Max

Hi,

I've noticed for quite some time already that the H264 4K Files, created by LRTimelapse, are somehow slow in Final Cut on my M1 Max (32 Core CPU, 64 GB Ram) MacBook Pro. They cause stutter, it takes a couple of seconds between play and pause when in the clip. Of course I can convert the clipse inside Final Cut to optimized media, but that's not ideal as thats an additional step und the optimized clips take up additional space.

And the CPU/GPU with the additional media encode/decode chips of the M1 Max should be more than capable of playing the timelapse render files smoothly.

All other H264 videos (like drone clips, or DSLM video files etc) perform 100% smooth.

Any ideas what might be the issue?

Which render settings are you using? Please provide the log after rendering.

With that settings you should definitely be on the safe side, the Videos should be standard MP4/H.264.
I don't know which issues FCP was with them, but I can tell you that they should work perfectly in other video programs and players. Try different players, like VLC, Quicktime etc. They all should play these files back fine.

At the end, H.264 was never meant to be an "editing codec". You'd definitely get better performance using an intermediate code like ProRes which has been designed for further editing.

Alternatively, just create Proxies in FCP, this should transform the source files to better editable ones for editing.
