Nikon or Canon?
Nikon does not have a mirror-up mode while connected with USB (PTP mode). Only way to achieve something like that is with the exposure delay property. It will raise the mirror and wait 1-3sec (depending on model) before it opens the shutter.

If you use live view, your mirror is already locked up, or am I wrong?
So switching to live view and then press the shutter release does not trigger the mirror, due to the fact that the mirror has already been locked up for live view.
Maybe this workaround might help you.
