The 6,632 ft. Humu'ula Saddle lies between the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes. Over it runs a river, not of liquid water, but of water vapor, flowing from the Eastern side of Hawai'i from the Pacific ocean, funneled through the lava-filled, high-plains between the massive mountains. From this vantage point, at roughly 13,600 ft on the slope of Mauna Kea, this river of clouds seems to cascade down the western side of the saddle, often dissipating due to the rain shadow effect of the island, leaving the slopes below as deserts in a tropical paradise.
