Hi psih, have you tried shooting in manual (M), you have more control over the camera for changing ISO, f value, and aperture compensation.
This is what I use f11. Then to start, I set the aperture compensation to -1 and I increase it along gradually as it gets darker,  the ISO starting at 100 and increasing to no more than 3600 to keep noise down and also these increases the shutter speed as it gets darker, I use this for shooting a sunset and reverse it for a sunrise, it is not an exact technique but it works for me, I am still learning.
