I am using offset and rotate in the HG panel, and they work well. Can someone explain what the stretch slider is supposed to do before I start experimenting with it?

It will do what it says, strech the curve. Normally you won't need it. I was thinking in removing it but decided to leave it. You will see how the curve changes if you use it.
