First Attempt Holy Grail - Craigular.B - 2015-06-08

[Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzw3n0Ib4bg]

Hello everyone! I've been a big fan of timelapse for a long time, and i finally bit the bullet on LRTimelapse. I had previously done some of this manually or a bit more hacked way (I used to use a script I found via the MagicLantern forums to deflicker). LRTimelapse is AMAZING. This made my life so much easier!

Details:
  • Approx. 4 hours condensed into 34 seconds
  • Interval was something like 13 seconds (to account for ML's Auto ETTR max shutter of 8", a 2-second preview for ETTR analysis, and a small buffer)
  • Shutter speed never exceeded 5" while shooting
  • 1,029 RAW files
  • Cropped to 16:9
  • Rendered to 1080p
  • No additional post work done (this was more a proof-of-concept and test)

Equipment:
  • Canon 5D Mark III
  • Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod and ball head
  • Canon AC Adapter
  • Magic Lantern Intervalometer
  • Magic Lantern Auto ETTR (automatically ramps exposure based on the previous frame)

The next time I do this I'd like to not crop in Lightroom and then import the RAWs with XMP sidecars into After Effects so I can pan around the image a bit more. I won't lie, I was doing this while drinking and was a tad drunk so I kind of just wanted to get it rendered to see it Tongue

I think the sky could use a bit more deflickering than I applied, and I could probably control the color and exposure of the immediate buildings better too (again, drinking Tongue). I'm fairly happy with the end result though.

I'd love some feedback if anyone feels like commenting. I love this software. It's so easy and powerful!

Hi,

very well done, I like it a lot. And for a first Holy Grail attempt, it's really great. The compostion is well chosen, sharpness is great (I want a 5D mark III and a prime lens Smile and not an old 550D), the fireworks are cool. Just love it. You must'nt have been drunk when starting the shoot Wink. Maybe a little less yellowish balance for the night part could also work. I've also made my first Holy Grail with ETTR a month ago (after testing manual ramping directly on camera, and an other time with dslrdashboard), and for me, it was the ETTR Magic Lantern technique that gives me the better results (and we just have to wait, and let the camera do all the job alone). I'll post it when I'll have finished all the sequences on the video I'm working on or maybe just that ETTR sequence. It could be great to have feedbacks on ETTR attemps on holy grail to learn how to use it the best way with LRTimelapse). On the Magic Lantern forum, it's way too technical and the very usefull tips are lost in a thousand posts.

I would really like to know what settings you used in the ETTR settings. There are many highliths in the city, the default 0.1% for "highliths ignore" may have been too low. And if the shutter speed didn't go to the limit, your ISO must have stay fixed at 100 I suppose.

Well done

Yannick

EDIT : I've created a "Magic Lantern ETTR and LRTimelapse" thread here to exchange usefull info on the way we use them : http://forum.lrtimelapse.com/Thread-magic-lantern-ettr-and-lrtimelapse

Thank you! I definitely wasn't drunk when I started shooting, but when it came time to edit I had a pretty good buzz going Wink

I had thought about tweaking the white balance at the end a bit, but decided not to at the time. Maybe I'll go back and tweak/rerender that.

For ETTR I think I just used the default settings. I could probably play with the highlight ignore setting a bit; as you say there are a lot of highlights in the city. I kinda like the look though, I'll have to play around and see.

And as for exposure settings, you're correct: my lens was wide open at f/2.8 and ISO stayed at 100 throughout. I probably could've stopped down a bit and let the shutter run a bit longer but I like the colors I got out of the fireworks with a 5" shutter.

The only downside of using ML's ETTR module is that you can't do a short interval easily (since you have to give it time to calculate the next exposure). I suppose for that you could do the dslrDashboard method or manually change exposure.

Thanks again!
