Better way to connect iPhone to Nikon D7100 - samuelphoto - 2017-04-09

Hi,

I did a lot of research to find the best way to make beautiful timelapse and then I found LRTimelapse and your video of qDSLRdashboard. I just bought qDSLRdashboard and I was wondering what is the best way to connect my iPhone to my Nikon D7100 with using the less battery as possible.

I travel and I often hike and recharching the battery is not always easy. I have two battery but anyways during a timelapse you dont switch battery.

I saw that you can use the Wifi (with an adapter for my d7100), a TP DLINK (something like that) or a cable.

It was making sense to me that the cable option is the cheaper and also the one that save the most the battery.

I just wonder what kind of cable do I need to plug my iPhone to my camera?

Can I use the cable that comes with my phone and then buy an adpter to plug it in the camera?

Thanks to let me know !

Sam

On iOS devices you can only use wireless connection. You can either use the WU-1a adapter with the D7100 or use the TP-Link MR3040 or MR3020 portable wireless router running the OpenWrt firmware with the ddserver package.
The MR3040/MR3020 has it's own battery so it will not use the camera battery while the WU-1a will use the camera battery.

Regarding the powering the camera Gunther can give you better options but I found that using the 'Case relay' system ( https://www.tethertools.com/product/case-relay-camera-power-system/ ) with an 23000mAh external battery gives you very good results.

Thank you for the quick answer. So with the adapter WU-1a the battery will last less time. I wonder how long it will last tho...

If I get the TP-Link MR3040 do I need something else to run the app with my camera? I don't get what is the OpenWrt Firmware with the ddserver package. I found this Tp-Link : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/887062-REG/TP_Link_TL_MR3040_Portable_Battery_Powered.html

I'm looking for the cheapest and more effcient way to make it work.

Thank you for letting me know!

OpenWrt is a special operating system that will replace the original TP-Link.

Yes I found your video about it! I will wait for the answer of Gunther to answer my questions as well.

So I need to get the TP-Link and replace the operating system and then how do I connect it the camera?

If I understand properly the Tp-Link creat a wifi so I can connect my camera and my phone togheter?

You will connect the camera via USB to the TPLink and the Tablet via Wifi. Exactly as I showed in the video

Perfect! I will do so. Last question for you. Do you know if with that système the battery last for long? For example to make a day to night time lapse or a night to day the battery will last long enough. The TPlink affect the battery of the camera or not really?

The TPLink does not affect the camera battery. But I'd recommend using an external power source for the comera, like the case relay from teathertools: http://amzn.to/2oXRPps
