Bulb Mode en Canon EOS 40D optocupler - abejarutas - 2017-08-27

Good morning:
I just tried my CANON EOS 40D camera in bulb mode. With the intervalometer in the same mode. Pressing triggers but does not keep the time I set > 30" sec., as in Gunther's instructions. The rest of functions PERFECT, except everything that has to do with BULB mode > 30"sec(astro..etc).
The only change I have made is to use the LH1056 optocoupler from Siemens. I'll try to send the datasheet to see if you can help me.

Thanks in advance to everyone.

I don't understand where in your circuit you've used the optocoupler. I guess it's on the trigger cable somewhere, but why did you install it (what did you try to achieve)? And could you please provide photos and/or circuit diagrams of your setup?

Hi SimenZhor:
First of all, thank you for answering me. I will try to explain myself better and apologize if I use the google translate.
1.- The optocoupler replaces the transistor according to the circuit that is attached. The resistance is calculated to activate the internal led, which in turn activates the output that can handle any device within the manufacturer's specifications.
2.- What I mainly wanted to do was take advantage of this material that I already had from previous experiments (IR barrier etc ...). It has the advantage of being an authentic electronic relay and completely isolates the circuit of the camera, not needing polarity or sharing the GND ... among other advantages.
3.- Attached is a simple electronic schematic for better clarification. I insist that everything works perfectly except Bulb point greater than 30 seconds.

Reading Gunther's book and other threads of the forum, I see that Gunther says that in fact 30-second longer times are not advisable for TL, but I just try to find out if there is anything I do not do well. It would need a concrete workflow of the BULB ramp.

Sincerely

I show you a test video of my first two practices with the LTRPROFREE

https://vimeo.com/233199298

In the first part of the clouds and the city was made using the technique of
"holy grail" as it got dark, all the controls on M (according to Gunther's book), but the tripod was moved both when handling the device (in a bag) and when touching the adjustment wheel of the camera. FAIL 1
In the second part, in the middle of the mountains I used the same technique, but in this case what failed me was the excessive light pollution of the towns of the sierra of Madrid. FAILURE 2
Finally the inexperience of trying to illuminate a large rock with led flashlights, ended up spoiling the timelapse. FAILURE 3

I have inserted the video here in this thread, and not in the showroom, because it is a test with many faults, only to share with you and see if you happen similar things, to improve between all.
A hug

Hi Jesus, Nice video! Did you manage to resolve your problem in Bulb mode? Have you tried on any other cameras?
I've not finished building my controller yet, still waiting for some final components to arrive but hope to use it on my 80D and 5Dmk2 soon!
All the best...

i am also wondering if you solved the problem with optocoupler and bulb mode >30?

RE: Bulb Mode en Canon EOS 40D optocupler - abejarutas - 2017-10-23

Hi,
Thank you all for your interest. The weather has made me unable to practice the timelapse in the field, but I can refer you to my answer # 3 of the day 2017-08-30, 14:23 to SimenZhor. Where I clarify part of your doubts.

I have not been able to check with other cameras except the Canon powershoot G11. I am sorry.

As for the optocoupler, it worked perfectly as you can see in this video:
 https://youtu.be/RvM1Ijzydvw

I also have some comments on the thread:
https://forum.lrtimelapse.com/Thread-housing-for-lrtimelapse-pro-timer-free.

I'm still waiting for an opportunity to go out to the country.
Best regards to all.

Hi, sorry
i am quite not sure, if i understand your problem:

1. Do you still have problems with Timer and optocoupler in bulb mode > 30sek?

2. What is the problem in detail: Does it nothing - is the bulb mode shot shorter than exposure time?
if yes, whats the amount of time difference?
id the time alwasy the same and too short?

I ask you, to get an idea an maybe i can help.

Best Regards

Hi,

I'll try to clarify myself, and forgive me if I use the google translator:
I solved the optocoupler problem, which works perfectly.
But ... I still have not been able to go out and practice bulb mode.
It is also true that Gunther does not recommend longer exposure times.
I have clarified the matter, thank you for your help.
Best Regards

Hi Jesús,

I am still working to build up the circuit and want to use an optocupler. I use a HCPL-817 and to avoid any mistakes or damages I would like to know how you fixed your problem.
Thanks in advanced.
