what's the best method of editing stills from time-lapse clips without ruining the timelapse sequence itself.
want to maybe apply stronger more aggressive edits for the stills versions.

The easiest way is to copy the raw to a different folder (images folder). It will then be a duplicate (allow lightroom to import duplicates), but it will be the easiest and safest way.
