Cruise liner time-lapse

I am planning on filming a day to night time-lapse on a cruise liner in March. The shot will be from up high mid ship looking towards the bow of the ship which will include the swimming pools and the ships lighting when it becomes dark. It will be shot on a Nikon D810 fitted with a 17mm lens. I filmed a few on a go pro for a family video I shot a year ago http://vimeopro.com/user330528/cruise/video/64983680 but I would like to improve on this, any advice on how to achieve a good time-lapse would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure to use rather long exposure times to get the surrounding water blurred. A couple of seconds would be good (ND filter).
