Lightroom/LRT Export Times

Howdy All,

I’m in the process of hunting down a new workhorse machine... but I am wanting to get some benchmarks from fellow timelapsers before I settle my research.

TL;DR
How long do your Lightroom and LRTimelapse exports take?

I’m shooting with a7riii + uncompressed raw, which ends up being 85mb/file.
Currently editing on a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15”.

I typically aim for 24 FPS, so a 20 second timelapse ends up being 480 photos.

A ~480 photo timelapse takes 1-1.5 hours with my current setup. This is with Original resolution and JPEG.
If I render video in LRTimelapse, the processing time for that same 20” video is roughly 20-25 minutes depending on export quality choices.

What are some benchmarks you guys could provide to me with your current computer setups?
Computer specs and general export times?

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Drew

Hi Drew, that would be difficult to tell and compare, because the LR export alone depends on so many factors...
- Type and resolution of raw files
- Amount of editing in LR (!)
- Location of the sequences (network or local harddrive, local ssd)
- Lightroom version (you should go for the latest Lightroom Classic, because export speed has been vastly improved in the last updates)
- Number of processor cores (!)
- etc...
But I think there might be a lot to do to improve your times. For example use compressed raw to bring down loading times and storage demands, as a very little component. Of course, getting a faster machine would help tremendously.

I've just done a short test on my AMD Threadripper 16 cores / 32 threads, Win 10, LR Classic 9.1.
400 image sequence, 24MB, Nikon Z6.

Create Visual Previews in LRT5: 2'20"
Export from Lightroom (JPG, Full): 7'15"
Rendering in LRT5 (MP4, 4K UHD, High): 1'13"

With both tasks all processor cores are being maxed out.

This is my computer (via google translate): https://translate.google.de/translate?sl...leitung%2F

For comparison here are the times on my Laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Extreme Gen 2, Core i9, 8 Cores/16 Threads). Same sequence.

Create Visual Previews in LRT5: 5'18"
Export from Lightroom (JPG, Full): 23'
Rendering in LRT5 (MP4, 4K UHD, High): 2'

My old laptop (Lenovo X1, Core i7, 2 Cores, 4 Threads)

Create Visual Previews in LRT5: 17'30"
Export from Lightroom (JPG, Full): 39'
Rendering in LRT5 (MP4, 4K UHD, High): 9'26"

Gunther coming through with the perfect answer as always...

Three different machines with different specs, exactly what I was wanting to compare - even added Preview times.

This is very helpful to me.
Thanks for your time,
Drew
